Control In Cuckoos Essay Ken Kesey’s masterpiece novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest uses many themes, symbols, and imagery to illustrate the reality of the lives of a group of mental patients. The element of control is a central, arguably the largest, and the most important theme in the novel. The element of control revolves around the two main characters of the novel, Randle P. McMurphy, and Nurse Ratched. These two characters are the exact antithesis of each other, and they both seek to get their own way. They both realize that in order to get their own way, they must gain control over their rival and the ward. McMurphy and Nurse Ratched have different methods of attaining and using what control they have. They have different motives for seeking control over others. They also have different perceptions of the amount of control they possess. Throughout the novel, these two characters engulf themselves in an epic struggle for the most control. This struggle for control proves to be futile fo r both characters as they watch what control they thought had collapse like a house of cards. The element of control in Cuckoo’s Nest contains a certain definition. Control as it applies to the characters in Cuckoo’s Nest means that one character has substantial influence over the actions of another character. This control can influence another character’s attitudes, emotions, reactions, or even how they live their day-to-day life. The character of Chief Bromden provides an excellent example of how strong an influence control has over a character in Cuckoo’s Nest. The Chief has multiple delusions in which he imagines society as a dreadful machine he calls ‘The Combine’. The Chief believes The Combine uses several machines (Nurse Ratched being one of the most powerful) to make people conform to its idea of order. One machine that The Chief mentions frequently is the ‘Fog Machine’, which creates fog that confuses and controls his perception of reality. The Chief does not mind this fog all the time, because it provides him wi th an escape from interaction with other people, particularly those who would make life worse for him. Sometimes, the Chief actually welcomes the thick fog. â€Å"And I’m glad when it gets thick enough you’re lost in it and can let go, and be safe again.† (Kesey, 101) By welcoming the fog, The Chief is allowing The Combine to control his conception of safety and security. Randle Patrick McMurphyCharacters with the ability to influence others through control in Cuckoo’s Nest do not always abuse their control for undignified reasons like Nurse Ratched. There are characters that use their ability to control for noble purposes, which sometimes provide a great deal of benefit to other characters. Randle Patrick McMurphy, the rebellious main character of Cuckoo’s Nest, provides the best example of a character using his control for noble purposes. R.P. McMurphy is one of the most memorable and heroic characters in modern fiction. The most basic description of him is a rebellious and noble con man. His goals during his stay at the mental ward are to serve out his time while making a little money on the side. His quest for control begins on his first day in the ward. His initial motive for his desire of control is quite selfish. He recognizes Nurse Ratched’s control by observing how she influences all of the Acutes to work against each other during a group meeting. He remarks to the other patients, â€Å"Is this the usual pro-cedure for these group ther’py shindigs? Bunch a chickens at a peckin’ party?† (Kesey, 55) Afterwards, McMurphy places a bet with some of the Acutes that he can â€Å"get her (Nurse Ratched’s) goat† which is an allegory for aggravating her and they by controlling how she handles her temper. He feels that if he can control Nurse Ratched, he can also influence (contro l) other patients to gamble with him. McMurphy then begins his epic battle with Nurse Ratched. He defies ward polices by taking an early morning shower and brushing his teeth before Nurse Ratched arrives at the ward. When she does arrive, she is angered with him, but does not let it show to anyone. Nurse Ratched even keeps her cool when McMurphy deliberately tries to set her off when he removes his towel only to reveal his flashy boxer shorts. â€Å"She can’t have them (the patients) see her face like this, white and warped with fury. She uses all the power of control that’s in her, and gradually the lips gather together again under her little white nose.† (Kesey, 90)McMurphy continues his relentless pursuit of control over Nurse Ratched. He manages to influence Dr. Spivey, into opening the tub room for the patients during the daytime. McMurphy influencing Spivey, who is regularly under The Big Nurses’ control, sparks her temper again but again she regain s herself before she expresses anger. The dam finally breaks when and McMurphy gains control over Nurse Ratched’s temper, when he rebels against ward policy of watching the World Series. He narrowly falls one vote shy of changing the policy, and he responds to the vote by sitting down and pretending to watch the World Series when he is actually watching a blank screen. When other patients join in on McMurphy’s rebellion, Nurse Ratched explodes in anger. She tries to use her control over the other patients to get them to stop ‘watching’ the game, but it does not work because the patients ignore her. Her temper detonates: â€Å"You’re committed, you realize. You are under the jurisdiction of me †¦ the staff. Under jurisdiction and control † (Kesey, 128) McMurphy clearly wins the control battle over Nurse Ratched. His influence and control over the patients is stronger than hers, thus believes that he has control of the ward. McMurphy realizes soon after the incident that his victory and control over Nurse Ratched are an illusion. McMurphy discovers that he is committed to the ward and his release is dependent on when only Nurse Ratched decides to release him. McMurphy then begins to fall in line with the others. He does not speak up at any more meetings and does not cause any more problems for Nurse Ratched, who has regained her control. She realized that she is once again the main influence in the patient’s life. She tries to make use of her regained control, by shutting down the tub room as a punishment for the World Series incident. McMurphy has an epiphany after he hears this. He realizes that he must regain control over the nurse. He realizes he must do this not just to spite her, but because no one else ever has stood up to her, because they are too afraid of her. He sees that if does not stand up for the other patients, they will never stand up for themselves and as a result, they will live the rest of their lives under Nurse Ratched’s control. McMurphy’s motive for taking control changes from self-benefit to self and group benefit. His first act after his epiphany renews the intense war for control between Nurse Ratched and himself. McMurphy takes a stand for the rights of the patients while risking the possibility of his release from the institution. McMurphy, much to the astonishment of the Big Nurse, rejuvenates their battle by smashing the window to the Nurses’ Station to retrieve his confiscated cigarettes. He sarcastically justifies his actions by saying that the glass was so clean that he completely forgot it was there. McMurphy’s conclusion that the patients never have stood up for themselves because they are terribly frightened of the Big Nurse is correct. Nurse Ratched’s control over the patients is so strong that she tears down the manhood of all of the men, puts fear in them, and totally controls their lives. Through his strength, McMurphy single handedly makes the men realize that they are not too weak to take control over their lives and to stand up to Nurse Ratched. â€Å"He reminds the lost souls of their humanity and restores their belief in the possession of joy.† (Buchanan and Hofman, 2000) McMurphy inspires the men to the point where they can take control back in their lives. He starts to recover their control by influencing more of the patients to take part in his rebellion. He uses his control over the men to give them back control over their lives. His actions influence others to do the same. A couple of the patients break the new window in the Nurse’s Station with a basketball. McMurphy creates a basketball team, and before Nurse Ratched can dissolve the team, Dr. Spivey acts to keep the team. McMurphy organizes a fishing trip for the patients. Nurse Ratched again tries to influence the patients so that they will reverse decision, but again she fails to win the small battl es of control. McMurphy even throws an after hours party for the patients. During the party, McMurphy and Candy Starr make a break through with Billy who discovers that he is in control of his own life. Through all these events, McMurphy reminds the patients that the people on the outside world are free of Nurse Ratched’s control and they all could be free of her control as well. McMurphy does not teach the patients to take a stand for purely unselfish reasons. He has other ulterior motives, such as making a profit out the fishing trip, but these other motives do not outweigh his main motive of helping the other patients. This is the reason he does not make his escape during the party, because he worries Nurse Ratched will regain control if he escapes. The climax of the novel, the final battle for control between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched is the ultimate testimony to McMurphy’s noble motive for controlling the Ratched and the others. Nurse Ratched arrives in the morni ng after the party to find her patients hung over and her most controllable patient, Billy Bibbit, in bed with Candy Starr. Nurse Ratched tries to use her control over Billy against him by threatening to expose the events to his mother. This plan disastrously backfires as Billy commits suicide. Nurse Ratched sees an opportunity to win the control battle by blaming McMurphy for Billy’s death and she makes her move. â€Å"I hope you’re finally satisfied. Playing with human lives – gambling with human lives – as if you thought yourself to be a God!† (Kesey, 266) This is the last straw for a furious McMurphy. He believes that he controls Nurse Ratched and he must make a final stand for all the patients. He does not realize that he lost control over the ward when Billy died. He attacks her and succeeds in literally exposing what she really is to the other men, which permanently takes away what little control over the others that the Nurse still possesse d. McMurphy believes that his control over Nurse Ratched is now absolute. This drastically distorted perception of his control falls apart, as his victory does not come without a tremendous price. He is taken away and lobotomized. McMurphy loses as much, if not more control than Nurse Ratched lost. When he returns to ward, Nurse Ratched puts him on display in a hopeless attempt to reinstall her control and fear into the hearts of the patients. â€Å"The men are not at all influenced by this, for they all are now influenced and controlled by only themselves.† (Semino and Swindlehurst, 1996) The Chief suffocates and kills McMurphy to put him out of his misery just before he takes control of his own destiny and escapes from the ward. Coming Of Age EssayNurse Ratched recognizes McMurphy as a threat after the first time they meet. He disobeys his first orders from the black boys to have his temperature taken. Other incidents such as the World Series prove to her that he is dangerous to the domineering control she exerts over the others. After the World Series incident, she realizes that her control over McMurphy may not currently exist, but she knows that she holds all the cards. She remains confident that she will break his spirit eventually. She continues to fight McMurphy by posting newspaper clippings of boating accidents when he proposes the fishing trip. She also uses her best methods to get control over McMurphy. She relocates him to The Disturbed ward after he gets into a fight with the black boys. She subjects him to EST and tries to turn the ward against McMurphy after the fishing trip. She posts the patients’ financial statements so that they can see how much money McMurphy has won from them. Mc Murphy does not submit to the EST, and he is able to explain and justify his winnings to the other patients. Even after her attempts to break McMurphy’s spirit fail, she remains confident that she will win control over him and the other patients. She thinks she has control because she has always had it and had never been without it. She makes the same mistake that McMurphy makes during the climax. She does not realize that she has already lost her control over the ward. This does not become clear to her until after she sees Billy’s dead body and after the patients actually see, what she thinks is her only true weakness, her actual female figure. Nurse Ratched thought that by giving McMurphy a lobotomy and by taking away a man who was like a god to the Acutes she would regain all of her control and put fear back into the men. What she did not realize was all of McMurphys strength; courage and spirit would stay with the men. McMurphy, even after he was gone, still gave t he men the strength to stand up for themselves and not let the Big Nurse regain her control of the ward. She also never realized that she could not maintain her control of the ward through manipulation emasculation and authority, even if those methods had worked with precision in the past. McMurphy and Nurse Ratched both desire the element of control so that they may influence the patients on the ward. They also know that only one of them can truly possess it. McMurphy wants control so that he can overthrow Nurse Ratched, which would give the men back their ability to control their lives. Nurse Ratched wants control because she wants the power to run the ward her way. They both gain control at some point during the novel. McMurphy gains control through rebellion and spite, and Nurse Ratched gains control through power, authority, and fear. In the end, they believe they have control over the other, but they do not realize that they both have lost control until it is too late. They both pay a harsh penalty for their struggle to gain control over the ward. Nurse Ratched forever loses her precious power status and authority over the institution, while McMurphy loses the friends he tired to help, his personality, and eventually his life. Throughout the novel, these two char acters relentlessly fight to control each other. They both realize that control can never be absolute. This idea does not occur to either of them until after they have lost everything they sought to control. This is what makes the element of control such an important theme in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Book Reports

This is also true for police officers who are using new technology such as body cameras, Google Glass, and brain fingerprinting. These examples of technology are helping police departments across the country fight crime, solve cases, and keep our communities safe. Technology Police departments are starting to utilize developing technology such as body cameras, Google Glass, and brain fingerprinting in order to be more efficient and to solve crimes. Body cameras protect not only citizens, but also police officers by capturing footage of crime scenes, accidents, and altercations. Some people find that body cameras violate the fourth amendment to practice unlawful searches and seizures, however, they do not because police officers wearing body cameras is public knowledge, therefore any footage the body cameras capture is also public knowledge. This footage can also be used to solve cases, to capture moments that police officers or citizens may not have seen, and also to protect citizens and police officers alike. Body cameras protect police officers by keeping them honest and also to prove their innocence in times where the media distorts their image; they also protect civilians in similar ways. Google Glass is a technology that has been recently released and used by police officers to connect real life moments to the departments record system. Police officers can take real life footage of traffic and parking violations and it will record the time, date, location, and license plate number and send it directly to the departments database. This technology saves officers time and in turn, money. This is another example of police officers using technology to their advantage in order to serve and protect our communities. " Brainwave Science , has developed technology that helps police do just that. Brain fingerprinting uses brain scans to capture how a crime suspect's brain reacts when being questioned by police and determines whether a person being questioned remembers a particular item or situation. Police are then able to potentially identify or eliminate suspects based on these scan results." (University of Cincinnati, 2017). This is relatively new technology that is still in development and testing. Once completely implemented into police departments, this will help solve cases much faster, help determine innocence and help police departments more efficient. Body cameras, Google Glass, and brain fingerprinting are all examples of new developing technology that police departments are implementing in order to be more efficient and effective. Incidents of violence in the book Sula by Toni Morrison "Sula" by Toni Morrison is a compelling novel about a self-confident woman called Sula. In this book, Sula shares an important relationship with Nel. In this relationship both girls share everything from perception, judgments, secrets and even crimes. In this book, Toni Morrison mentions a few scenes about violence that probably affected Sula's life and the characters around here.The book Sula was written in a time when there was prejudice against blacks. In the book we hear about Helene's prejudice trip on the trains and other events of prejudice. The author also tells us that Sula's house is vibrant and active. The author calls Sula's house the peace house and the residents of the house are always arguing. Her house is "a household of throbbing disorder constantly awry with things, people, voices and the slamming of doors" (52). For instance, the initial desire can push one to purchase beautiful things but on the other hand, the second impulse that one should not buy them but if one follows the first impulse of desire, she or he is likely to go broke. However, the desire based on one’s basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing are more reasonable and should be dealt with without a second thought (McMahon 998). Desire to some extent can be negative or positive depending on the situation or one’s background. For example, there is no harm for one from a successful background to desire a car as it will assis t in operating his or her daily activities. However, for one from a poor background it can be troublesome as this brings an uncomfortable feeling to the surrounding population such as being jealous but to the owner the car brings fulfilment and enjoyment. According to Lama, self-satisfaction alone does not determine the negativity or positivity of a desire or an activity. All the non-virtuous actions committed by people may appear to be a feeling of satisfaction at the time of action but that cannot justify the actions (McMahon 993). The Communication Process Cycle The word communication derived from the Latin word communis that means to impart, to participate, to share or to make common. It is a process of exchange of facts, ideas, and opinions and as a means that individual or organization share meaning and understanding with one another. In the other words, it is a transmission and interacting of facts, ideas, opinion, feeling and attitudes. It is the ability of mankind to communicate across barriers and beyond boundaries that has ushered the progress of mankind. It is the ability of fostering speedy and effective communication around the world that has shrunk the world and made globalization a reality. Communication had a vital role to play in ensuring that people belonging to a particular country or a culture or linguistic group interact with and relate to people belonging to other countries or culture or linguistic group. Communication adds meaning to human life. It helps to build relationship and fosters love and understanding. It enriches our knowledge of the universe and makes living worthwhile. The Communication Process / Cycle The transmission of senders ideas to the receiver and the receivers feedback or reaction to the sender constitute the communication cycle. The process of communication begins when one person (the sender) wants to transmit a fact, idea, opinion or other information to someone else (the receiver). This facts, idea or opinion has meaning to the sender. The next step is translating or converting the message into a language which reflects the idea. That is the message must be encoded. The encoding process is influenced by content of the message, the familiarity of sender and receiver and other situation of factors. After the message has been encoded, it is transmitted through the appropriate channel or medium. Common channel in organization includes meeting, reports, memorandums, letters, e-mail, fax and telephone calls. When the message is received, it is decoded, by the receiver and gives feedback to the sender as the conformation about the particular message has been carefully understand or not. Furthermore, the process of communication involves that (sender, message, encoding, communication channel, receiver, decoding and feedback). Therefore, person who desires to convey the message is known as sender. Sender initiates the message and changes the behavior of the receiver. Message is a subject matter of any communication also might involve any fact, idea, opinion or information. It must exist in the mind of the sender if communication is to take place. For encoding the communicator of the information organizes his idea into series of symbols (Words, signs, etc.) which, he feels will communicate to the intended receiver or receivers. Moreover, communication channel be has to select the channel for sending the information. Communication channel is the media through which the message passes. It is the link that connects the sender and the receiver. For receiver person who receives the message is called receiver or receiver is the person to whom the particular message is sent by the transmitter. The communication process is incomplete without the existence of receiver of the message. It is a receiver who receives and tries to understand the message. Additionally, decoding is the process of interpretation of an encoded message into the understandable meaning. Decoding helps the receiver to drive meaning from the message. Lastly, is feedback in communication process / cycle. Communication is an exchange process. For the exchange to be complete the information must go back to whom from where it started (or sender), so that he can know the reaction of the receiver. The reaction or response of the receiver is known as feedback. Brain drain: On whole process there is a possibility of misunderstandings at any level and is called brain drain. It may arise on sender side if they do not choose the adequate medium for delivery of message, by using default channel and it may also arise when receiver does not properly decode the message. In other words, we can say that it is breakdown of cycle at any level. Refer below (figure1.0 figure2.0) the communication process. Verbal Interpersonal Communication Effective our verbal or spoken communication is dependent on a number of factors and cannot be full isolated from other important interpersonal skills such as. The process involved and the steps we can take that verbal communication are (speaking skills, listening skills, self-Disclosure, conflict and assertiveness, gender and verbal communication and barriers to effective verbal communication). 3.1 Speaking skills To communicate effectively, speakers need to consider background, needs, and abilities of listeners. Moreover, Messages conveyed more effectively when spoken in simple, concrete, and specific way and Good speakers make verbal and nonverbal messages consistent. 3.2 Listening skills Listening skills is also a very important in communication. By listening, the listener is able to interpret and understand what the speaker is trying to input to the listener. In order for the listener to get the information more effectively, the listener should not hog the conversation but should pay careful attention to the person talking. The listener also should use reflective listening and paraphrasing skill to respond back to the speaker. If ever the listener wants to give any feedback, the listener should give the feedback in a competent manner. However, listening is not the same as hearing. Listening means paying attention not only to the story, the use of language and voice, and hoe the other person uses his or her body. Adults spend average of 70% of their time some of communication, of this average of 45% of their listening compare to 30% speaking, 16% reading and 9% is writing. (Refer below figure 3.0) 3.3 Self-Disclosure The communication for self-disclosure is defined as a psychological term as sharing with someone information which helps them understands you. Moreover, for the several important factors that influences self-disclosure and the state of the relationship involve that speak for yourself offer your own thoughts, feeling and opinions. Use sense describes what we see, touch, taste and smell. Additionally, describe what you are feeling and what you do and how you behave. It is important to note that self-disclosure should be voluntary process. 3.4 Conflict and Assertiveness As you become more assertive, there are four basic ways to resolve conflict that is aggressive, manipulative, passive and assertive. The goal of aggressive behavior is to gain control or power. When you are aggressive, you express needs and want freely but in a hostile, tactless, or angry manner. For the manipulative refers to making attempts at indirectly influencing someone elses behavior or actions. As human beings, our emotions often cloud our judgments making it difficult to see the reality behind hidden agendas or motives in different forms of behavior. The controlling aspects or shrewdness linked to manipulation are sometimes very subtle and may be easily overlooked, buried under feelings of obligation, love, or habit. In this article youll learn some ways to pick up on manipulative behavior occurring around you, so that you can sort it rather than jump to it. Furthermore, the goal of passive behavior may result in a persons rights being violated. The passivity may consist of hesitant speech, and avoidance of eye contact. Passive behavior usually reflects the underlying belief that ones feelings arent important, or that one is too weak to act on those feelings. Lastly, the goal of assertive behavior is to resolve conflicts in a way that is satisfying for both you and others. When you are assertive, you express problems, feelings, needs, and wants in a way that is both self-satisfying and socially effective. 3.5 Gender and Verbal Communication Every race, culture, civilization, and society on this planet shares two things in common: the presence of both men and women, and the need to communicate between the two. Gender and verbal communication is how each biological sex use verbal communication. There are many differences in how of both men and women, and the need to communicate between the two. Men are found to speak more in general as women are found to speak more in detail and specific. For example, if a friend has a nice house, a man would say, This is a nice place. A women would say, This is such a nice place, the kitchen is nice, living room so huge, and the bathroom also neat. An experiment had shown verbal communication of both genders to be affected as early as birth and these differences last until passing away. Barriers of Communication There are many reasons why interpersonal communications may fail. In many communications, the message may not be received exactly the way the sender intended and hence it is important that the communicator seeks feedback to check that their message is clearly understood. There exist many barriers to communication and these may occur at any stage in the communication process. Barriers may lead to your message becoming distorted and you therefore risk wasting both time and money by causing and misunderstanding. Effective communication involves overcoming these barriers and conveying a clear and concise message. Moreover, a categories of language barriers to communication include that clearly, language and linguistic. Nevertheless, even when communication in the same language, the terminology used in a message may act as a barrier if it is not fully understood by the receiver. Conclusion Effective of communication is a major part in achieving your educational goals. Effectively communicating with your teachers and peers is essential when it comes to your learning. Many times your instructor is the sender. Her job is to send you messages that include information about the skill you need to learn. Your instructors messages might include lectures or handouts for you. Your peers can also be the senders of a message. Many times learners are asked to work together as a team. You might be asked to work on a specific activity that would require you to receive messages from other team members or an appointed leader. Sometimes you may be asked to be the sender. Remember that communication involves speaking, listening, and observing. Communication is a two-way process that involves getting your message across and understanding what others have to say. Communication involves active listening, speaking and observing. Now that you have learned the communication process, you can begin to evaluate your communication skills. Begin to watch yourself in action. Each time you communicate observe what you do, how it went, what went well, and what could have been better.

Education Cannot Be Found in a Book :: Personal Narrative Writing

While baby-sitting my younger cousin, I noticed that she was frantically searching through a stack of books. When I questioned what she was looking for she responded frankly, "An education." I had to laugh at such a childish remark. Many individuals believe that education is simply obtained by reading books, listening to lectures or sitting in classrooms. However, education is not received by being an active listener, or an excellent reader. College does not guarantee a higher education; rather, it provides the atmosphere and tools that are required to develop into an educated, and scholarly individual. Education therefore is achieved by progressing through the different stages of knowledge, and acquiring the skills required to be an active observer and participant in the real world. Education is too often emphasized by the regurgitation of facts, which diminishes the use of critical thinking. There are too many dualistic students in society today who think topologically. That is, they believe that there are only two different answers to every question, the right one, and the wrong one. This type of thinking not only limits the quality of education that the student receives, but it also exploits the teacher's indolence and insufficient ability to bestow a higher education upon their students. Although I was ranked number four in my graduating class of 371 students, I do not feel like I have received a higher education than the student who was ranked number 371. Why? Simply because high school is equivalent of a board game, one repeats what the teacher said, one's thinking is emulative of the teachers, and one turns in the "busy work" on time. Hence, high school has educated an individual on how to be resistant to critical thinking. On the other hand, college professors attempt to make students think critically about issues, which concern their lives, and the lives of others. A good college education is not bestowed to the students by their professors; rather, the students furnish their own quality of education. A student can choose to remain resistant to critical thinking, or the student can maneuver into the next stage of education, which is thinking with multiple perspectives. In this multiple stage, the student begins to regard issues with diverse perspectives and to consider multiple answers to questions (Mitchell, 2000).

Inferno Canto X

Canto X of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno starts with Virgil and Dante on their way to the sixth circle. The sixth circle is where the tombs of those who believe that the soul dies with the body are put. We call them Epicureans. Dante then meets two Epicureans. The first one, Farinata degli Uberti notices Dante because of his accent. Farinata asks who his ancestors are and finds out that they were his enemies. The conversation goes on until another Epicurean appears, Cavalcante dei Cavalcanti. Dante and Cavalcante know each because Guido, the son of Cavalcante is good friends with Dante and he married Beatrice. Cavalcante then asks why his son isn’t with him. Dante gives a reply that makes Cavalcante think that his son is dead. After hearing this, Cavalcante got depressed and went back to his place. Dante realizes that those who are in the sixth circle can only see the future. Farinata and Dante continue their conversation then Virgil calls Dante and tells him that they get going. Dante was left with curiousity as he and Virgil walk a path that disgusted them. I find the start slow and as the story goes on it becomes fast paced because of the way Farinata was introduced to Dante by Virgil. I also have a feeling that Virgil knows their groups are enemies. Line 39 of Canto X, Virgil told Dante â€Å"your words must be appropriate. † Why? How come Dante knows nothing about Farinata? Another fast paced part was when Cavalcante suddenly appeared. Vague information was given about him. When you think about it, it’s strange how Farinata and Cavalcante didn’t even mind each other. Their supposed to be enemies, right? Farinata is a Ghibellines while Cavalcante is a Guelph. They didn’t even argue. In this canto, you can see how Dante is always curious about the Florentines. He asked Farinata who else are in the sixth circle and also asked Virgil if he can meet any of the Epicureans. Much curiousity is awaited at the next canto. We can see how Virgil was rushing Dante to leave. There is also a hint that Dante might meet Beatrice. As they walk, at lines 135 to 136, â€Å"along a path that strikes into a valley whose stench, as it rose up, disgusted us. † In my opinion, the stench symbolizes the intensity of what they have done. The stronger the stench, the more intense they have done.

Analysis Of The Book The Maze Runner - 1036 Words

Maze Runner Essay Draft #1 The Glade is a fictional society from the James Dashner novel â€Å"The Maze Runner†. It is made up of teenage boys who have no memory of who they are or why they’re there. They live in a small field surrounded by a giant, ever-changing maze filled with horrific and deadly creatures. The story follows a boy named Thomas who arrives in the Glade and has to adapt to their slang and way of life. Soon, strange things begin to happen, disrupting the Glade’s imperative order, a word emphasized throughout the story. For good reason too, as the Glade is divided into four working sections where everyone does their fair share. Knowing that they’re the ones who were there before Alby and Alby was one of the first Glade rs it can be inferred that these boys were killed because there was no â€Å"order† in the Glade when it first started. Finally, the Homestead is just a rather pathetic looking house in the northwest corner of the Glade, containing a few beds, a bathroom and a kitchen. It is best described by Alby on page 43, where it states: â€Å"Homestead- stupid place is twice as big than when the first of us got here because we keep addin’ to it when they send us wood and klunk. Ain t pretty, but it works. Most of us sleep outside anyway.† Those who are sick or require some other sort of medical attention are the only ones the readers ever see using the beds (with an exception to when all the Gladers had to take refuge inside the Homestead), so aside from the kitchen and bathrooms, the Homestead isn t a big part of the Glade. Whenever a new Glader arrives, or a â€Å"Greenie† arrives, they are shown around and introduced to the different jobs of the Glade. When Alby is first showing Thomas around, he explains that â€Å"[he’ll] spend the next two weeks working one day apiece for our different job Keepers- until we know what you’re best at.
